My Important Thoughts About The Book:
Club Earth is the sequel to My Life Among The Aliens. I really don't like to do the same
thing over and over again, but I keep getting more and more ideas for aliens interacting
with families. Fortunately, because of the way the first Aliens
book ends, I couldn't just write another book of alien drop-in stories. I had to develop a
new set-up for the action. In order to make this book a little different, I also tried to
make Dad a stronger character and take Mom out of the action more.
Though this book is made up of short stories, just as My
Life Among The Aliens was, there is a story-line that keeps turning up
relating to how the family members do the work need to take care of their home. A
lot of the humor in this book is what is known as satire. Satire uses humor to make
comments about human activities.
Pay special attention to the names of the planets
the aliens come from. I took them all off from the Periodic Table of the Elements. Doesn't
that sound scientific? Well, no. I kept one of those kids' vinyl place mats with the
Periodic Table printed on it next to my word processor and just picked off any name that
sounded good when I needed one.
The Critics' Important Thoughts About The Book:
 | Kirkus Reviews: "... wise and funny sequel to My Life Among the
Aliens"..."Written with a big dose of kid-friendly humor, this novel is
much like its predecessor. Gauthier carefully plots episodic action, lacing it with
plenty of witty commentary on family life, food, chores, pets, and other youthful
concerns."
|
 | Horn Book: "Gauthier uses pungent humor to deliver deadpan diatribes
against slothful aliens, lazy kids, macho dads, and overburdened moms. Offbeat and
wacky, with Gauthier's imagination working on overdrive, this book really is from outer
space; humanoid kids will know it's not just Mom's cooking that rates four stars."
